Will I be seeing Dr. Klausner or his assistant for my care?

Dr. Klausner has a solo practice, which means he personally sees all patients and always personally directs their medical care.

Do you accept insurance?

Dr. Klausner is not signed up with any insurance plans, including Medicare, and is considered an out-of-plan provider. Dr. Klausner's practice is highly time-intensive, providing lengthy personalized care for each individual. Insurance is typically set up for 5 or 10 minute appointments, as you've undoubtedly experienced, and insurance company payments are set up accordingly. It is impossible for Dr. Klausner to conduct his practice under these constraints. 

Dr. Klausner's practice is fee-for-service, which means payment in full is expected at the time of treatment by check, credit card, or cash. You will receive a "superbill" after each treatment that has the appropriate insurance diagnoses and treatment codes, and you can submit this to your insurance plan for reimbursement directly to you. Reimbursement can range from nothing to almost 100%. 

Typically, a PPO type plan will reimburse you an average of 50% for an out-of-plan provider visit, after your deductible has been met. HMOs will pay nothing. Medicare will reject the claim because Dr. Klausner is not a Medicare provider, although sometimes secondary insurance ("medigap") will pay. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to how insurance companies make their decisions.

Can Dr. Klausner be my primary care doctor and take care of all my medical needs?

Dr. Klausner did a full family practice residency and became board-certified in family medicine. However, he is no longer doing full-service primary care. This means that he no longer offers family practice services like PAP smears, EKGs, sport physicals, in-office surgeries, or delivery of babies. He is no longer doing any hospital or emergency room work.

Most patients who come to see Dr. Klausner usually have a primary care physician through their insurance to take care of these needs. If you ever need a specialist, Dr. Klausner can refer you to one.

How many osteopathic treatments will it take for me to get better?

There is no set treatment plan for any condition. This is not "cookbook" medicine where everyone with the same symptoms receives the same treatment. Each person is a unique individual and it would be unfair and inaccurate to predict how long it will take for a condition to respond. 

In general, the longer a patient has had a chronic condition and the more challenged their health is, the longer it may take the body to respond. Sometimes when dealing with chronic conditions in an adult, it can take between 6 and 12 treatments to see if the body will respond or not. At other times people can feel better and notice a difference after one or two treatments. 

Children that are in generally good health often respond most quickly as they do not have as many layers of stress and tension as adults do. 

How many osteopathic treatments a week will I need?

It is very rare to treat more than once a week. The interval between treatments is determined by how the body is responding to the previous treatment. Sometimes there may be several weeks between treatments to give the person enough time to work with the changes that are going on in their bodies. Often at the beginning of the process we may treat once a week or once every other week.

Do all appointments include both osteopathic and functional medicine evaluations and treatments?

No, some people come specifically to address one issue or the other. Almost everyone ends up wanting to try hands-on osteopathic treatment, but this is not required.

How long is an osteopathic appointment?

The first appointment is 2 hours long and includes history taking, physical exam, and osteopathic treatment. Follow-up appointments are around 45 minutes long for adults and 30 minutes for children and infants.

How long is a functional medicine appointment?

The first appointment is at least 45 minutes long and can be up to 1 1/2 hours in length. Follow-up appointments are 45 minutes long.

What if I can't make it to my appointment or forget my appointment?

We kindly ask for 24-hour notice on appointment cancellations. A new patient/first appointment requires giving us a valid credit card number to hold the appointment slot for you. We are setting aside a 2-hour block of the Doctor's time for you, and there are often patients on the waiting list or emergency cases that would have taken your slot if we knew that you couldn't make it.

Our office staff will always call you the day before or the Friday before a Monday appointment to remind you of your appointment time, and you can change it or cancel if the need arises. We do charge in full for missed appointments if the circumstances warrant it, especially if someone waiting in need could have used the time.

What should I do or not do after an osteopathic treatment?

Remember, a treatment can go on actively for several days, or even weeks after you leave the office. In general, drinks lots of water, especially in the days immediately following treatment. This helps the body to flush out toxins that are being released from the system. If you get dehydrated, your muscles and joints will often feel more irritable.

Allow yourself to rest if you need to. You may need more sleep or feel like taking naps. Do not plan to work out the day of and often the day after treatment. Going for relaxing walks is usually fine. Please do not motion test an area after treatment to see if it is better. Also do not go home and stretch or do yoga or tai chi or whatever practice you may engage in, thinking that this will help the healing process.

Usually people call me after doing this and tell me that they feel much worse, not better. The body is resetting and may interpret what you are doing as a strain and tighten up again in response to your well-intended efforts.
